Legal English

The English course in international law focuses on legal issues, including contracts, establishing companies, debtor-creditor relationships and intellectual property. The training is designed for students who study law and lawyers who want to develop their skills in English for use in commercial law. The Legal English course is suitable for students at Upper Intermediate level and above. During the course students will study International Legal English with the opportunity to take the International Legal English Certificate (ILEC).

Why take the ILEC??

For any lawyer working in an international legal environment, English language is essential. Employers need legal staff with a level of proficiency in English good enough to be able to communicate with clients and colleagues from other countries and to process written documents. For recently graduated lawyers and law students is important to show employers that they possess these skills. ILEC is a certificate created in a way that satisfies both employers and lawyers. It is also suitable for law students who intend to start a course in their home country or abroad, which includes legal English. ILEC is for law students and lawyers who want to work in the fields of international trade law, intending to study law in their own country or abroad, where courses are conducted in English, looking for professional development within the organization, learn English as part of training.

The exam:

The exam consists of four separate papers testing reading, writing, listening and speaking, which together last just under 3.5 hours (not including breaks). The last module is conducted by qualified oral examiners for Cambridge ESOL, who pass program that includes a rigorous selection, implementation, training and supervision. The exam is based on realistic texts and topics that practitioners may encounter in the course of their work. The International Certificate in English law is designed to assess language skills in a legal context. Qualifications correspond to levels B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework

Assessment and certificates

Written papers will be marked in the UK, by Cambridge ESOL examiners. Overall grades are reported normally within six weeks of the test date as three passing grades. Examination work are assessed by a number of positive and negative evaluations. Positive evaluations are B2 Pass, C1 Pass and C1 Pass with Merit.

How to register for ILEC:

  • BY POST
    If you choose to register by post, you should send to the British Council address (Sofia 1504, 7 Krakra Str.) your completed and signed entry form together with clear copies of your ID card/passport, and of your proof of bank payment. Documents must be received in the office of the British Council by the deadline for registration.From the website of the British Council you can download the registration form. It will be your responsibility to check with the British Council by phone or email if your documents have been delivered within the registration period.
  • IN PERSON
    If you decide to register in person at one of the Registration centers of the British Council, please bring with you your ID card/passport, complete and sign an individual entry form and pay the fee for the exam you have chosen in cash or submit a proof of a bank transfer. If you are unable to come in person you can send a person with your notarised written agreement and with a copy of your ID card/passport to register you.
  • You can also register at English Academy. . We make group registration of our students. Please bring your ID card/passport, a proof of a bank transfer and complete and sign the entry form. If you are unable to come in person you can send a person with your notarised written agreement and the above mentioned documents.

  • How to pay for the exam?

    The exam fee for 2010 is 500.00 BGN and must be paid either in cash at the British Council office in Sofia or by bank transfer to:
